Israel kills Iran security chief Ali Larijani and Basij commander in Tehran strikes

Israel said overnight strikes killed Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, and Gen. Gholamreza Soleimani, head of the Revolutionary Guards' Basij force, whom it said was hit in a tent used as a makeshift headquarters. Iran's Supreme National Security Council later confirmed Larijani was killed along with his son Morteza, his office chief and several guards.

Why it matters

Larijani was the highest-ranking Iranian official killed since Ali Khamenei on Feb. 28, and the Revolutionary Guards answered with multiple-warhead missiles fired at the Tel Aviv area that night.
