Katz says troops will stay in southern Lebanon after the war as UN warns of occupation

In a video statement, Defense Minister Israel Katz said that when the operation ends Israeli forces will remain in a security zone inside Lebanon with security control up to the Litani River, repeating that displaced residents will be barred from returning and border-village homes demolished. At an emergency Security Council session, UN aid chief Tom Fletcher asked members how to prepare for 'a new addition to the list of occupied territories'.

Why it matters

Katz had announced the security zone and Gaza-style home demolitions on March 24; saying the zone will outlast the fighting turns it into a post-war occupation plan and brought it before the Security Council.
