Turkey's presidential office said a ballistic missile fired from Iran toward Turkey was "engaged and neutralized by NATO air and missile defense elements" over Gaziantep's Sahinbey district, with no casualties. Ankara summoned Iran's ambassador to demand an explanation; NATO had also intercepted an Iranian missile over Turkey on March 4.
Why it matters
Turkey is the only NATO member whose territory Iran's retaliatory fire has targeted, and the alliance had already raised its ballistic missile defense posture after the first interception.
