Syria says it is evaluating entry into Saudi-Turkish-Pakistani defence pact

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani told the Manama Dialogue in Bahrain that discussions were under way to evaluate Syria's entry into the Mecca alliance. The mutual-defence agreement binds Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan; Pakistan and Turkiye have pledged military support to Riyadh as it faces Houthi attacks.
Why it matters
Membership could bring Syria into mutual-defence commitments with Saudi Arabia while Riyadh faces attacks from the Iran-backed Houthis; Syria has not announced a decision to join.
