Trump said U.S. Central Command had 'obliterated every MILITARY target' on Kharg Island, the terminal for about 90% of Iran's oil exports, but chose not to hit its oil infrastructure and would reconsider if Iran interfered with shipping in Hormuz. CENTCOM later said more than 90 targets, including mine and missile storage, were hit; Iranian media reported at least 15 explosions and no damage to oil facilities.
Why it matters
Holding the export terminal hostage to Hormuz traffic turned Iran's main oil revenue into leverage, and Iran's military answered that regional oil and gas sites with U.S. interests would be set on fire if its energy infrastructure is hit.
