Drones hit Oman's Duqm port and a tanker off Musandam

Oman's news agency said two drones targeted the commercial port of Duqm, one hitting workers' housing and injuring a foreign worker. Oman's Maritime Security Centre then said the Palau-flagged tanker Skylight was attacked about 5 nautical miles off Musandam; four of its 20 crew were wounded and all were evacuated.

Why it matters CBS and AFP called them the first suspected Iranian strikes on Oman, the mediator of the U.S.-Iran talks, and Duqm is a U.S. Navy logistics hub outside the Strait of Hormuz.

Interim council of Pezeshkian, Mohseni-Ejei and Arafi takes over Iran's leadership

Under Iran's constitution, a council of President Masoud Pezeshkian, judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei and a Guardian Council jurist took over the supreme leader's duties; security chief Ali Larijani said it would be formed Sunday, and state media named cleric Alireza Arafi as the third member. The Assembly of Experts must choose a new leader "as soon as possible."

Why it matters The council kept a constitutional chain of command in place under bombardment, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said a new supreme leader could be chosen "in a day or two."

UAE says one person killed in Abu Dhabi as it intercepts Iranian missiles

The UAE's state news agency said at least one person was killed in Abu Dhabi by shrapnel after several Iranian missiles were intercepted, the first known death from Iran's counterattack. The UAE called it a flagrant violation of its sovereignty and reserved the right to respond.

Why it matters The death made the UAE, which had tried to stay out of a U.S.-Iran fight, a direct casualty of the war and hardened Gulf opinion against Tehran.

Oman's mediator says a U.S.-Iran deal is "within our reach"

Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi told CBS News that Iran had agreed never to hold nuclear material that could make a bomb and to blend down its enriched uranium stockpile irreversibly, and that a "peace deal is within our reach" if diplomacy was given space.

Why it matters The mediator's public account of Iranian concessions was published less than an hour after Trump had approved the strike, which began before the technical talks planned for Vienna the following week.

Trump approves Operation Epic Fury aboard Air Force One

Flying to Texas, Trump gave the final order for the Iran operation at 3:38 p.m. EST, writing "Operation Epic Fury approved ... Good luck," according to Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine. Hours earlier he had told reporters he was "not happy" with Iran's negotiating and had not decided.

Why it matters The order set U.S. carrier groups, strike crews and air defenses moving toward an operation that began about nine and a half hours later, with technical talks still planned for the following week.

The State Department authorized the departure of non-emergency U.S. government personnel and their families from Israel, citing unspecified "safety risks," and said Americans may wish to leave while commercial flights were available.

Why it matters The advisory was issued the morning after the Geneva round ended without a deal, a signal that Washington was preparing for Iranian retaliation against Israel.

U.S.-Iran talks in Geneva end with "significant progress" and no deal, Oman says

Oman's foreign minister Badr al-Busaidi said the third round of indirect talks between U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and Iran's Abbas Araghchi had ended with "significant progress" and would resume soon, with technical talks in Vienna the following week. Araghchi called it one of the "most intense and longest" rounds.

Why it matters Neither Washington nor Tehran gave a readout, and analysts had warned that ending without a deal could trigger U.S. military action; two days later the strikes began.
